130 km southward from Jaipur.
Ajmer is an oasis of religious sanctity. The harmonious blend of Hinduism
and Islam gives this town a unique character. Muslims from many parts of
the world come to worship at the shrine Kwaja Moinuddin Chisti. Even the
great Emperor Akbar came here to seek solace. Other places of interest
include Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra, a pillared mosque of red sandstone; the 12th
century artificial lake, Ana Sagar, Nasiyan, the Jain temple.
11 km away is the placid
green Pushkar lake nestling in the rolling hills, one of the holiest of
Hindu Pilgrims centres. Every year in November, Pushkar comes alive in
colors, sounds and excitement at one of India's biggest cattle fairs when
over 100,000 lacs of people gather here. The sacred lake of Pushkar believed
by Hindus to be as old as creation has the extent temple to Brahma, the
only Brahma temple in the world. |
